One of the first improvements to Sam Houston Park was the construction of a central bandstand in 1901. Benches were placed around the park and the bandstand for comfortable seating for the thousands that attended twice-weekly concerts. The original bandstand was destroyed in a storm in 1915 but a replica was constructed by The Heritage Society in 1966.
